About Us

Soldiers for the Cause is the opposite of a Soldier of Fortune Magazine. Brought together by the Occupy Wall Street Movement and a collective desire to empower veterans to use their own political legitimacy and power rather than being weaponized we seek all that is in opposition to the soldier of fortune. We publish, sometimes with disclaimers, enlisted veterans that have left leaning and sometimes radical views. In 2011 we were endorsed by The New School and New York University.

Matt Baker

Matthew Baker is a veteran of the United States Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Ronald Reagan from 2002 to 2006. He holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Literature from the University of Oklahoma and is studying at the Norman, OK, campus for a Masters of Education. Baker has worked as a reporter and photographer for The Purcell Register in Purcell, OK, and is currently teaching English and Journalism to high school students in Norman, OK.

Jack Doxey

Jack is an Army combat veteran from the Korean War. He served in Korea in 1953 with the 7th Regiment, 3rd. Infantry Division. He retired from the Hewlett Packard Company in 1991. After retirement, Jack owned and operated a management consultant business. He’s presently Vice President of the Veterans for Peace (VFP) San Diego Chapter. The VFP pledges to use non violent means to achieve peace.

Patrick Gokey

Patrick Gokey, Wisconsin native, is a United States Navy veteran residing in Madison, Wisconsin.

Matt Johnston

Matt is a native Texan and an Eagle Scout. He served in the Navy on the USS Ronald Reagan. He enjoys writing poetry and playing various instruments. He goes to school. He considers himself mostly non-partisan, but tends to lean toward the liberal side of the two poles. He likes his eggs over-easy, and his coffee black as night.

Karol Olesiak

Karol Olesiak is a poet, writer, and activist. He is a graduate of Eugene Lang Liberal Arts College at The New School and an MFA student at The University of San Francisco. As a Navy sailor, he commissioned the USS Ronald Reagan, navigated the straits of Magellan, and served in the Persian Gulf. In 2011 Karol headlined The Bowery Poetry Club in New York. That same year he became a staunch supporter of The Occupy Wall Street Movement and became entrenched in the Occupy network of affinity groups. He has written many political essays and has been translated into Spanish. Karol’s poetry has been incorporated into cinematography and sound art.
